Understand the sentiment, but for an athlete who is making a nice salary from the sport, is that the smartest thing to say, in front of the largest media gathering for Olympic sports outside of the Olympics?

RRCA Accepting Applications For 2012-2013 Roads Scholar Class

The RRCA is now accepting applications for the 2012–2013 Roads Scholar Class. The goal of this program is to assist American post-collegiate runners who show great promise to develop into national and world-class distance running athletes. Grants in the amount of $5,000.00 per year have been awarded to four to six athletes annually since the program’s inception in 1996. The deadline for applying is June 1, 2012.

Online Registration Closes Today For Joplin Memorial Run

JOPLIN, Mo. – May 16, 2012 – Online registration closes tonight at 10 p.m. PST for the Joplin Memorial Run’s half marathon and 5K events to be held Saturday. The cost for the half-marathon is $60 and the cost for the 5K is $25. Founded in 2003 as the Boomtown Run, the Joplin Memorial Run was created as a way to honor the 161 people who lost their lives in the May 22nd, 2011 tornado and to provide hope to the Joplin community.

St. Louis, a local not-for-profit organization that specializes in providing fitness events and programs for the region on a year-round basis, announced today the formation of a new race – GO! St. Louis All-American 5K & Fun Run, which is set for Sunday, June 17. The first-time father’s day race starts at the Kirkwood YMCA and finished in Webster Groves, MO and is open to participants of all ages and fitness levels. Participants receive a great-looking finisher medal (5k only), t-shirt and post-race refreshments, including ice cream. Top finishers will compete for cash prizes, while age group winners receive an apple pie. Entry fees range from $10 - $30. The GO! St. Louisan Haskins Tries For Olympics Triathlon Slot

Haskins, a cross country and swimming standout at Parkway South, will compete Friday at the ITU World Triathlon San Diego with the hope of qualifying for her second Olympics. Among her advantages is momentum. Haskins, 31, won two races last month, the South Beach Triathlon in Miami and the St. Anthony's Triathlon in St. Petersburg, Fla. The victory at St. Anthony's was her third in a row, her fourth in five years and set a course record of 1 hour, 56 minutes, 55 seconds.

From USATF - DES MOINES, IOWA — Olympians rose to the forefront at the 103rd edition of the Drake Relays, playing a hand in three of the 15 meet records that were set during the four-day track and field extravaganza. World leader and U.S. Olympian Wallace Spearmon set a Drake Relays record in the men’s invitational 200-meter dash in 20.02 seconds, breaking Michael Johnson’s mark of 20.05 set in 1997. “He (Johnson) was one of the guys I idolized when I was growing up,” said Spearmon, who has run a 2012 world leading time of 19.95. “So to even be mentioned in the same sentence with him is a great honor. I have been trying and trying and finally reached my goal."
